Lucas Braathen: Believe in Your Dreams and Make History

Lucas Braathen is an exceptional alpine skier. Both a top-level athlete and a socially conscious figure, he made history in the sport by winning Brazil’s first Winter Olympic gold medal.

A dual cultural background and precocious talent

Lucas Braathen was born in Oslo, Norway, to a Brazilian mother and a Norwegian father. He grew up immersed in two distinct cultures. At a very young age, he showed great talent for alpine skiing and began his international career competing for Norway.

In 2023, he became the slalom World Cup champion. He was then regarded as one of the best skiers of his generation.

A surprising retirement at age 23

Also in 2023, Lucas Braathen announced his retirement from competitive skiing at just 23 years old. This decision shocked the skiing world. He attributed his decision to conflicts with the Norwegian Ski Federation, particularly regarding sponsorship rights and freedom of expression. He wanted to remain true to himself and his values.

A strong comeback under the Brazilian flag

In 2024, Lucas Braathen returned to competition. This time, he chose to represent Brazil, his mother’s homeland. This decision is highly symbolic, as Brazil has virtually no tradition in winter sports.

With this new flag, he wants to show that anything is possible, especially when you come from a country that isn't typically associated with a particular sport.

A historic achievement at the 2026 Winter Olympics

At the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, Lucas Braathen achieved a historic feat. As Brazil’s flag bearer, he won the gold medal in the giant slalom.

It becomes:

  • the first Brazilian to win a medal at the Winter Olympics,
  • the first South American athlete to win gold in a winter event.

This achievement marks a turning point in the history of the Winter Games.

Believe in your dreams and follow your own path

Above all, Lucas Braathen wants to send a powerful message to young people: you have to believe in your dreams and have the courage to pursue them, even when the path is different or difficult. He encourages everyone to stay true to themselves, their values, and their passion.

With this in mind, he also established a foundation called the LUCI Foundation, which was launched in 2021. The foundation aims to make sports more accessible to children and teenagers, particularly those who do not always have the financial means or opportunities to participate.

In particular, the foundation supports sports initiatives and organizes events such as ski camps for young people, to help them discover sports, build their self-confidence, and believe in their dreams. Through sports, education, and shared experiences, Lucas Braathen hopes to help the next generation believe in their potential and dare to dream big.

Lucas Braathen is not just an Olympic champion. He is a symbol of freedom, courage, and openness. His journey shows that sport can transcend borders, inspire others, and create new possibilities for the future.
